What To Look For Before Buying Over-Ear Headphones?

The thing about headphones is that they sometimes can't really be judged by look alone. A lot of people think Beats by Dre are overrated, and they might be. But if sound quality is what you're after, Beats' bass is unmatched in the industry.

The point I'm trying to make here is that how a headphone looks isn't as important as what it sounds like. So before you go and purchase a pair of over-ear headphones, take some time to actually research the product you're buying.

If you want your headphones for music listening purposes, it's best to find ones that are balanced in terms of high treble and low bass. You don't want them sounding too tinny, but you also don't want them to be too overpowering in the low end either.

Some people like headphones that are more on the bass-heavy side, and if you're one of those people, it's okay to look for ones with a stronger low end. But make sure they aren't overwhelming - ideally, anything past 75% bass should be unnecessary (and also fatiguing to listen to after a while).

For those who like their music more flat, find headphones with the flattest sound signature possible. Beyerdynamic is one brand known for having fairly balanced headphones; they're not too expensive either.

Also, it's best to test headphones before purchasing them. You can't really do this with online stores, but you should be able to test them at your local electronics store.

If you're looking to buy headphones for use in your daily life - whether it's just around the neighborhood or commuting - then there are a few important things to consider.

Noise-canceling headphones are great for daily use, but you have to know that they are expensive. Anything under $300 for one of these is probably not going to be very good quality.

You're better off buying a cheaper pair of headphones and then putting on an external pair of noise-canceling headphones over the top. The combination should give you similar results to what you'd get with a pair of noise-canceling headphones on their own.

If you don't care about noise canceling, then it's best to look for something that doesn't leak too much sound.
