A video editing laptop can be a very personal choice as it is a machine that you'll live with every day. You'll need to make sure whatever system you buy is suitable for your needs and has all of the features you require. Here are a few important things to make sure the laptop has, if it doesn't then don't buy it!

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is essentially the brains of your computer and is responsible for most data processing, this includes all of the calculations needed in video editing. If you are working with 4K or higher resolutions then your CPU will need to be quite powerful.

The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is responsible for all of the graphics on screen while you are working in your NLE, this includes the editing interface, the preview window and any video or image footage you are working with. You can either get a laptop with two GPUs (one for regular use and one specifically for graphics) or an integrated one which is more commonly found in laptops since it uses less power. An Nvidia GTX series GPU is always preferable for video editing (they tend to be the most powerful GPUs), you can find these in two main formats - mobile and desktop. The main difference between the two is that mobile version Nvidia GPUs are less powerful than their desktop counterparts but they use less power so your laptop battery will last longer at the expense of some rendering performance. You'll need an Nvidia GTX 1050 or better to be able to playback 4K footage smoothly on a laptop.

A lot of the newer laptops come with some form of VRAM (video memory) which is essentially just an extra bit of graphics card that provides additional memory for the GPU, allowing it to handle more complex scenes and effects before slowing down. The more VRAM you have the better but it can be quite difficult to find out exactly how much VRAM a laptop has and if it will be enough for your needs.

The hard drive is used to store all of your data such as the operating system, installed software and video clips. Most laptops come with an SSD (Solid State Drive) for this instead of a traditional spinning hard disk which means you can access your files much quicker.
